I made the top 100 - w00t! .. umm, I mean crikey! Great idea guys, thanks for your efforts :).

  2. 2 AustralianBlogs.com.au

Hey thanks Michael, it’s a first cut and there are obvious errors but if it gets a few more readers for the local blogs…

  3. 3 Tim

Interesting stuff. Can you explain a bit more about what is actually being measured for benefit of us technoklutzes?

  4. 4 thewinchester

I’m just suprised i’m as high as I was (#300). However, there does seem to be a few dupes in there, and all those Yahoo Groups should be culled from the list.

None the less, great work at measuring this and keep it up. Like time I would also like to know how it comes up with these magic numbers.

  5. 5 AustralianBlogs.com.au

Hey Tim, (wow!) thanks for dropping by. Congrats on the number 2 spot.

    What the script does is:
    - takes the URL of the blog as submitted on AustralianBlogs
    - queries the Yahoo search engine for backlinks for that URL (ie. the number of webpages that link back to your blog)
    - cleans it up a little and sorts the results in descending order

The thinking behind this form of measurement is that, in lieu of robust web traffic stats, backlinks are a means of seeing which blogs are being referred to, or in turn blogged about (ie. ‘noisy’).

I hate to turn this thing into a popularity contest because it isn’t. Blogging should cover anything and everything that is of interest to anyone, and should be weighted accordingly. I toyed with the idea of breaking the noisy list into tags/categories, perhaps something for the to-do list.

There are lots of holes in this little toy, for example the number of links vary depending on the URL used (www.roadtosurfdom.com may return different results to roadtosurfdom.com - we ended up using the URL as submitted to AustralianBlogs to mitigate this). It also doesn’t seem to handle the myspace sites very well. Anyway, lots to keep us busy :).

I hope we’ll be forgiven for the ‘fuzziness’ of the results but my primary goal for publishing this raw little list is to highlight the fact that our local blogosphere is vibrant and has the breadth to match.

  6. 6 Tim

Thanks for that. Much clearer now!

  7. 7 AustralianBlogs.com.au

Hey thewinchester, great to see the ‘creek up there. Sorry about the dupes, as per my previous comment it doesn’t handle some domains very well. I didn’t want to cull those just in case those affected bloggers are offended by the omission so I’ll have to apologise profusely (in advance) instead.

  8. 8 Blaze

Ah well at least I made it under 200 (barely!) ;). Thanks for the feature guys. It’s nice to see a good list of popular Aussie blogs. I love seeing what my neighbours are up to.

  9. 9 Blaze

Hmm I have just noticed one thing though, do you realise a lot of these aren’t blogs? Some aren’t even Australian. Try #7 for example.

Also just so you know when you query search engines for the amount of backlinks, it will usually only show the amount of links for that “domain” not any subdirectories etc. Thats why you will have trouble with myspace and any other blogs on large domains or shared domains.

  10. 10 AustralianBlogs.com.au

Bugger! Thanks Blaze. Spammer entry now culled from AustralianBlogs (don’t these people read the terms of service?)

Re the subdomains, I tried all the major search engines and they have varying degrees of success. All the Blogspot subdomains work well, so do the Typepad and Livejournal ones I think. I finally chose Yahoo because they were more liberal in their link acceptance. Work-in-progress ;)

  11. 11 Des Walsh

I “love” the idea of being a noisy Aussie bloggers - who said galahs? - and it’s great that you’ve pulled these together. Onya. Now, will I get *any* work done today?

  12. 12 AustralianBlogs.com.au

Galahs? Des, you’ve obviously been surfing Trevor Hampel’s birding blog :)
On a serious note, I remember dropping you and Trevor Cook an email shortly after the launch of AustralianBlogs with an introduction of what we were trying to achieve. I have appreciated your support ever since. Thanks for rolling the dice with an unknown website.

  13. 13 Simone

I was wondering why I was so high up (324), because even though my site does well in google, there’s not that many people linking to me (I’d say less than 50 I think). But I’ve figured out it’s also counting when I leave a comment on others blogs with a link back to my blog…. So in that respect I guess I’m noisy…commenting on other blogs!

Interesting list though, I’ve even met someone in the top 10, ha ha!

  14. 14 AustralianBlogs.com.au

I spent a bit a time trying to come up with an apt description for the list without letting it degenerate into a popularity contest (or worse, offending anyone). I think ‘noisy’ captured all the right connotations!

Great to see the Perth blogs right up there on the list.

  15. 15 CW

Wow! Great list.. Must.. stop.. looking.. must.. work..

  16. 16 lisa

Hey, great work. I was surprised to see the ranking for my blog, but I think I understand it now. This is not a rank among peers, but a rank among LISTED peers. Two Aussie blogs I read as part of my daily bread and butter aren’t listed at all so I guess there are holes in any script like this.

On that note, is it acceptable to add another person’s blog to AustralianBlogs.com.au? Obviously it wouldn’t be acceptable to claim someone else’s blog at Technorati.

  17. 17 AustralianBlogs.com.au

Heheh, C-Dub leading the liblogosphere charge - I love it.

Lisa, it’s completely acceptable from our point of view to submit another Australian blog on their behalf but it might be worthwhile just dropping the blogger an email as a courtesy :) (Bookmark away!) Thanks for dropping by desert-pea.

  18. 18 Mike

165th place! Hopefully I will be able to move up a bit next year.

  19. 19 AustralianBlogs.com.au

Read your feed yesterday, Mike. Congrats on the move.

  20. 20 Tim Goodwin

Hey there, nice little toy (and what blogger would object to being called ‘noisy’?) I’m blogging in what you’d definitely call a niche market, but it was still good to see it up there at 303.
Do you plan to run it at intervals so we can see how we’re travelling, and who else is getting a gig?

  21. 21 AustralianBlogs.com.au

    Hey Tim,

God bless that long tail…I think I’ll do another one in a few months. No-one seems to have taken it too seriously (which is a good thing).

    Cheers
    Jon

  22. 22 Mike

BTW, how are you calculating this?

  23. 23 Mike

Sorry, just read your comments above. BTW, is anyone from Melbourne interested in meeting up? I will be back there soon.

  24. 24 lisa

Fun list. It’s nice to be considered noisy (no. 189), after not having posted for a few weeks! This is a good kick in the bum to get noisy again.

  25. 25 AustralianBlogs.com.au

Thanks, Lisa - get back into it!

  26. 26 Heather

Sulking now! My blog’s not on that list. At least I don’t think it is. That is one freaking loong list.

Can’t say I like your filter thingo. The question could’ve been taken two ways. I took it the wrong way. Has nothing to do with my ability at maths. Is this an Aussie blog, anyway??? It’s maths, not math.

  27. 27 AustralianBlogs.com.au
  28. 28 David Jackmanson

It looks like links to Blogger _Beta_ blogs are counted seperately…Let’s Take Over (which is on BBeta) shows 211 links, which is would be the commenting I have been doing.

  29. 29 AustralianBlogs.com.au

    Hmmm…interesting.

  30. 30 Cookster

Bugger, down at 612 - come on people, go and have a read and help me scale the ladder of blogdom… gotta at least beat my old mate Docker Dave! ; )

  31. 31 AustralianBlogs.com.au

As a diehard (south) Freo boy, I can safely say that it’s unusual that a Docker has pole position on any ladder over anyone :)

  32. 32 Getting down under

Thats for the script mate - glad to make the top 100…..just ;)
    Regards

    Mark

  33. 33 genevieve

A great idea, Jon. Not sure that it is quite there yet - David Tiley’s Barista can’t possibly be in the 900s, nor Cast Iron Balcony at the bottom.
Is it picking up my blog? http://austlit.typepad.com/cfn
    I have done a rename recently, but I thought I re-entered it in Australianblogs.com

  34. 34 Jason

392 - at least I’m in the top half… Better than average? Haha. Interesting experiment though. Will have to poke around some of these and see what’s going on.

  35. 35 Susanne

    I’m number 319? Awesome. Noisy bloggers rep-rah-sent!

  36. 36 AustralianBlogs.com.au

Thanks guys. Just something you do when the kid’s gone to bed :)
Genevieve, it might have picked it up under the old name. Will check for it when I do it again shortly.

  37. 37 AustralianBlogs.com.au

One more thing…the URLs I used to measure ‘noisiness’ was the one submitted on AustralianBlogs.com.au, now if comments, trackbacks, hyperlinks etc use a different URL for that blog then they not be included in the stats. I think this may explain why the noisiness factor of popular blogs like castironbalcony may be understated.

  38. 38 theskaz

Woohoo…number 657. I want to be higher though *insert evil laugh*

Great idea..very cool! Has already generated some traffic to my site.

  39. 39 Gavin Heaton

Great list of Australian sites to work through thanks!

  40. 40 Malcolm Lambe

I’m an Aussie blogging/vlogging in Paris. I don’t know whether you are the same but David Sifry from Technorati admits they have problems tracking French blogs. Technorati is very slow to update me and shows me having only 27 links. Which I’m sure is wrong. I’m getting 7-800 Uniques a day coming to Wallyworld. You have me at 203 (like an old Peugeot).

  41. 41 Anastasia

Wow I got on there @ 109, but it’s the old link (I switched to Typepad in December)

  42. 42 Vincenze

Wow, I’m in the top 549!

  43. 43 craig bellamy

    I’m not noisey.

  44. 44 DodgyPete

And here I was thinking the only people in the known universe who even knew my blog existed were just my close friends (and even they don’t read it that often).

    Thanks for noticing!

  45. 45 Beancounter

Congrats on all your hard work. Now I’d better stop bludging and get blogging so maybe I’ll show up on your next review

  46. 46 Dimitri Karamanos

Strangely enough, my old site ‘finance.soj.com.au’ got put in there, despite the site being all but destroyed. The links somehow showed up on the new domain however, which is how I originally got here. I’m puzzled!

Regardless, I appreciate the post and link, keep up the good work!

  47. 47 Michelle

Somebody please cue the twilight zone music for me…a link from this page is showing on my stats for my blog, but my blog is not in the list.

Nonetheless, I appreciate the traffic and wouldn’t have found this great list of aussie blogs otherwise!

  48. 48 Design Federation

how can we become noisier? :)

  49. 49 Luke

Increasing your ‘back links’ on the www will help. For example… leaving comments with your URL

  50. 50 Stacy Fabian

oh when i went away for doing my first chrim. Stacy Fabian.
